HOW TO GET RID OF A COUGH
Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:
- Drink extra fluids to help thin secretions and make them easier to cough up
- Avoid exposure to allergens & irritants
- Avoid smoking
- Dry, tickling coughs can be relieved by sucking on cough lozenges or hard candy
- For nasal stuffiness, try saline nasal spray or a neti pot
- Increasing humidity in the air helps relieve a cough
- Practise vocal hygiene measures (e.g. adequate hydration, avoiding vocal strain, smoking cessation, reducing alcohol, reducing caffeine intake)
- Cough lasts for more than three weeks
- Cough is particularly severe or is getting worse
- Unexplained weight loss, a persistent change in voice, or lumps or swellings in the neck
- Worsening leg swelling and shortness of breath, especially when lying flat
- It after being exposed to a patient with tuberculosis or whooping cough
See a doctor immediately if you notice:
- Severe difficulty breathing
- Swollen face and hives
- Severe chest pain
- Blood in sputum
- Choking
- Inability to speak
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Persistent night sweats
